Ramzy Baroud: “When I learned that David
Borrington – an exceptional artist with a high moral
sense - is creating a piece of art inspired by my book:
My Father Was A Freedom Fighter: Gaza’s Untold Story, an
array of feelings went through me. I felt humbled,
overwhelmed and truly happy that my words, narrating the
story of my family - my people - transcended its
intended form, to a whole new variety, intangible,
artistic and visually poetic. As I learned more about
the accomplished artist, and his personal courage,
legacy and accomplishments, I couldn’t wait for my copy
of the artwork to arrive. And here it was, my book on a
sheet of white paper, seemingly straightforward lines
and curves that attempted to convey a history, my
history, that of my family, my neighbors, my friends,
Gaza, Palestine. There was a village, a refugee camp, a
local market, my house, freedom fighters, ordinary men
and women – the real heroes in my book - a settlement,
an army encampment; even, but specially a graveyard,
situated by the ‘Red Square’ and dotted with names of
members of my family who passed away, fighting for their
dignity on this earth, for a moment of peace. Zarefah ..
Mohammed .. and the others. David Borrington
immortalized them all, in so dignified away. Thank you,
David, your artwork shall adorn my wall for many years
to come.”
David Borrington: "When I first read Ramzy Baroud
book I was amazed by his family history and the incredible
spirit which runs through their blood to survive through
the most desperate and hostile situations. Even
at breaking point their bold sense of justice and morals
is shown throughout the book.
Ramzy's writing style is very visual which helped to
recreate his tory with ease in my etching. There are lots of little
sub stories such as leaving the house in a hurry with the
old blankets because they thought they would be coming back
later through to the exploding bread on one of their many
business adventures.
The limited edition etching is full of scenarios from his
book and this is why you will receive a signed
copy of "My Father was a Freedom Fighter" to go along
with the original piece of art so you can fully
appreciate the artwork and what it represents.

Book,
Ramzy Baroud: "This is a book about Gaza. It is
also a book about my family, and in particular my father,
how they moved from living as Palestinian farmers, growing
their own crops, to fleeing for their lives and ending up
in a Gaza refugee camp. Throughout the book I spell out
the context of the Zionist invasion, and interweave my family
story within the wider history of my people and the destruction
of their old ways of life. So far we have many books from
Israelis, some sympathetic and others not, regarding the
events that led to the creation of the State of Israel,
and its later expansion. But there is really very little
that tells the story from those of us who lost everything.
I am proud to tell you the story of my father; he symbolizes
the fire of resistance in every Palestinian heart; the resistance
of all human beings who are oppressed, in this case by the
Zionists of Israel and by the imperial forces that support
them. The writing of this book has been for me a passion,
yet it is none the less an accurate reflection that has
kept the Palestinian resistance alive for so long over such
great odds."
